Tuscaloosa Wildlife Trapper Tip of the Month:
How big is a mouse territory? How far do mice travel from their nest or for food?
You may found mice within your house or near to your house. They would prefer to stay where they will get a safe shelter and excessive food, and it can be your house or any place that contains garbage.
Mice are also used as a food source, so if you find them at home, you can hunt them to eat delicious food. If you do not like to eat, try to get rid of them as soon as possible otherwise you may find them in a higher quantity.
How far can they travel to get food?
They prefer to keep a small living area and only travel about 25 feet from their living place in search of food. If there is a shortage of food, then there are chances they may travel more than 25 feet for the sake of food. But it is rare; they do not prefer to go far from their living place.
If you see the dropping of their waste more then 25-30 feet, there is a chance another mice family is living within that area.
Do mice mark territory?
Yes, like other animals, they also mark their territory. They mark the territory with their urine, so if they are living within your house, we bet you they are peeing all over your house to mark their territory.
They usually examine their territory every day, so this can be the reason they may not get into your trap. So if you want to set the trap to keep them, you have to find which areas they often visit; once they become familiar to those areas now, it’s time to use the trap to get rid of them.
Mice breed very quickly
You will be a wonder to know female mice can have 5-8 babies at a time, 20 days after mating. The life span of mice is about 3-4 years. Imagine in 3-4 years they may produce hundreds of rats. Use the trap method to get rid of them in the initial stage; otherwise, you are going to suffer from a lot of diseases.
Mice can get into anywhere; they just need a small hole. A hole than is equal to an eraser is enough for the passing of a rat, and they just need to enter the skull rest of their body can easily fit into the hole. So there are chances they can be found anywhere in your house.
When are they active?
Usually, to prefer to sleep in the day time, they can sleep for more than 7 hours. They stay active at night in search of their food. So if you want to place the traps use them at night and check them in the early morning. You can catch most of the mice from your kitchen by placing traps near to food. Be careful while keeping the traps because of their excellent hearing power; they can listen more clearly as compared to humans.
